Students procrastinate all the time, and while it isn’t the best for their stress or revision time, for some the pressure does help them overcome their otherwise distracted nature. We can’t just let students turn in late assignments because they put it off, but there’s got to be a way to get them to work in an appropriate timeline. As someone who is a devout procrastinator, I’m no stranger to sweaty palms twenty minutes before the final due date of a piece. That said, it’s not something that I enjoy, but it always feels easier to do it with the pressure. Without it I might go play a game or listen to music, but with that pressure on my shoulders I feel like the words are being squeezed out of me. I want students to be able to relax and do long terms assignments in my class without having to stress at the very end. To combat the inevitable, I’ll do a weekly “checkup” where students can show me what they have done so far on what they have been working on. No judgement from me, and no grading either. At most I might complement their work. I have a professor right now who does just this and it feels like it makes my life so much easier even though I’m doing a lot of work. Rather than write hundreds of pages at the end, having light checks gives me a due date for the sections of my piece, even if it’s a soft due date. Of course, even if students had all semester to do an assignment, some of them will be irresponsible enough to wait til the very last day. *COUGH*
The post is totally meant to make fun of myself, please don't take this personally if you also procrastinated.
