Why do we write? No, really. It’s a valid question. Why, as a society; as an individual, do we write? When I think of that question, a million answers come to mind (not really a million, but a lot!). Here are a few reasons (off the top of my head) that I can think of:
Communicate
Create stories
Create poems
Record Conversations
Record past events
Record business transactions
Record thoughts and feelings
Convey information
Provide more precise details in communication
The list goes on. Here is my epiphany, though…
I feel that writing’s main purpose… the main reason it exists… boils down to one reason, and one reason only…
To give permanence to verbal and non-verbal communication.
Stay with me, now, and think about it for just a minute…
We can do everything that I mentioned above verbally. Hell, humans have been doing the above verbally ever since language evolved. So, why do we write it down? Because it gives permanence to our communication. God gifted humans with the ability to communicate with each other through verbal language. But our lives are busy, the amazing brains that He gave us, are not infallible and we can’t remember everything (I can’t remember what I had for supper last night!). So we write.
