So in typical Tanasia fashion- I am LATE. Today is NOT the National Day on writing. However, any day, if not everyday, is good day to reflect on the importance and the purposes of writing. After all, as college students- we do engage in writing for all sorts of purposes. I had a very hard time trying to find a sole reason for #WhyIWrite, but I found it impossible! Therefore, I thought a list of the top 3 reasons #WhyIWrite, personally, would be more accurate.
#1: #WhyIWrite: TO IMPRESS
Growing up I was considered/labeled "smart" and school was my niche. I found pride in getting good grades and standing out intellectually against my peers. Writing was, and still is, a way for me to express my knowledge, impressing those who read my work. Especially paired with reading, writing is a way to truly show your competency in any area by allowing you to express and explain ideas within your mind as words to be comprehended by an audience.
#2: #WhyIWrite: TO COMMUNICATE
Whether it be a email, or a text message, or a caption for a picture of Instagram or SnapChat- I write to communicate to others in the wide world around me. HOW I write fluctuates based on who I'm trying to communicate with and the medium in which I am doing so. For example, to communicate formally (i.e. an email to my professor or a post to an institutional forum) I would pay attention to both grammar and conventions as well as the clarity of the point I was trying to get across. In an instance where I would be communicating informally (i.e. a text message to my best friend) the only thing I would be concerned about is the clarity of my point, not necessarily the "correctness" of what I was writing.
#3: #WhyIWrite: TO CREATE
For 2 years in middle school I wanted to be a rapper. Although I have given up my aspirations of being the world's "dopest" rapper, I do still write creatively from time to time. Any time I get to create feeling with my words I do. My grandmother has every card I have made her since I was five. I kept a diary Freshman year of college. When my sister experienced bullying at school I wrote a short story with the main character being her as a superhero. Creating feeling with words is one of my favorite ways and reasons to write because it takes something so temporary as emotion and gives it the longevity of a lifetime.
